I went on a road trip a couple of weeks ago and the offline map for a good chunk of southern Colorado only took up a couple gigs. And it deletes in a certain time frame automatically so it’s not like it will be taking up space in the long term. 

If you’re driving somewhere that rural just download an offline map and you’ll be fine. There really aren’t many cell dead zones these days and if you’re driving that far from cities and major highways you really should take the time to either download a map or buy a physical map.
