My wife has never played the original RE and we're considering having her give it a go (she's picky about her games she invests time into). This game is a fantastic staple and standard for the "survival horror" series and I recommend everyone to give the game a shot.

I have a GTX690 in my machine (dual GPU SLI setup on a single card). This card is a monster and still stacks up against many card configurations today. The top end of the GeForce 600 series still delivers performance needed to nail games at some of their highest settings.
