Private pilots here: I’ve always been taught, and recited in my checklist, to crack the door in any crash landing, water or land.  In GA crashes it is often the fire that gets you, not the impact.  Most GA airplane doors barely close at all and are super flimsy and would likely jam in even the smallest impact.

Won’t the seatbelts usually keep you in place during an accident like this? And If you aren’t wearing seatbelts...well, I think you’re probably going to have even bigger problems during a side impact accident, like your head and body ponging into everyone else in the car like a wrecking ball.

Private pilots learn to crack open the doors on their airplanes before impact, if they are about to crash-land. The doors could get jammed and the pilot & passengers could get trapped in the wreckage.

I have an S2000 and I will avoid driving it in traffic now because it’s difficult to see around all of the blobby suburban wannabees.
