It might not be the “worst example” but it’s a pretty significant downplay of the importance of various asian characters/subplots in the book. For example the whole chinese aid to the Americans thing—there was a feel good scene about partnership between the two countries or “science conquering borders” or what have

Did you just say assuming a character is of color because her name is common for that race is as bad as intentionally casting a character of color with a White actor...?

Movies and TV aren’t 90% white because all the casting directors have gotten together and said, collectively, “I hate actors of color and I will never, ever audition anyone who isn’t white.” Movies and TV are 90% white because white people have the luxury of only considering the world from their point of view. That’s

Not really. It’s similar to assuming someone named Nguyen is Vietnamese. It’s a reasonable assumption.

Thank you for making my point. You go out of your way to find the ONE white guy named Park when you know damn well every other Park you’ve ever met in your entire life was Korean.

I know white people named Lee and black people named Verge. But if a character is named Park I’m going to audition Asian actors because that’s how I would interpret the character absent something explicit. The problem is that in America the default interpretation is white so the creator’s intent is irrelevant because

You can’t tell me that it didn’t occur to the casting director that someone named Park is supposed to be Korean. They also made up a character named Ryoko, who isn’t even in the book, and cast her with a non-Asian actress too.

The fact is that casting directors just don’t give a shit, and they should.

The author and critics are saying the character is Korean American and not just Asian so you may have missed something.

It’s funny, I never internally thought about the character’s race when reading the book, but when I saw the movie it took me a minute to figure out that that actress was playing Mindy because somewhere in my brain I had decided she was Korean. I had a distinct moment of “huh, weird”. I’m not annoyed about the casting

Erasure is a better word but less specific to the situation. Asian erasure in mainstream media in the US is pretty common, also.

U get what they mean come on.
