I tip the same way that I would at any other restaurant. Even though you are getting your own food, they still have to service your table to clear dishes and maybe refill drinks, which sometimes, is more trips to your table than a regular restaurant.

also from CA. i do the same thing for a basic tip. a bit more for exceptional service, or if the server is really nice and I'm feeling spendy.
