I think the point was that violence against women (see "fridging") is an overused trope that uses the victimization of women as a literary/storytelling shortcut... it's a cheap trick that sacrifices a damsel in distress for the sake of generating pathos for the male protagonist... not that there shouldn't be violence…

I think the discussion about casual cruelty against women is a symptom of a greater issue - taking the easy route in creative work.

However, I'm reluctant to say that violence against any single group of people should be removed from creative work since that has the potential to shut down a vein of narrative.

No one is advocating removing all violence directed towards women from all games. That's pretty much a strawman position that people who don't want anything to change use to rail against.
