I’d group Sesame Street with Mr. Rogers, but agree with the rest of your comment. I still tear up watching replays of Big Bird trying to understand where Mr. Hooper was.

I honestly think it has to do with his authenticity and how he really was the guy trying to be there for us, even if he didn’t know us. 

Personally, I was a child who grew up latchkey. It was the 80s, both of my parents worked and had long commutes. My sister and I had no real adults taking care of us for many hours of the day, and Mr. Rogers was there and made me feel safe. I think he was truly special and filled a need in many kids’ lives.

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that he was studying to enter the priesthood. I think he saw that organized religion has a place with everyone and he wanted to share the best parts of it without hitting anyone over the head with theology.

I think it’s because he made us feel like we were all his friends, and that we were all important. We weren’t watching some rando person on TV entertain us. This was someone who loved and cared for us.
