Could be it. Sometimes the visuals really interfere with the audio clues a game gives you. A friend of mine looks away while fishing in Animal crossing because the the audio cue that the fish is biting is a lot more effective when you don't have the bobbing of the floater tensing you up and causing you to jump the gun.

They are absolutely designed to be money/time traps. There are levels where the winning strategy is essentially not skill but luck.
I do know if pay trap is a fair assessment. I have made it to level 435 in the last year and a bit and never spent a dime to pass a level.
