I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect backwards compatibility. The early consoles may not have it, but the last 10 years of Nintendo consoles, starting at the DS, were all backwards compatible with the console before it.

If you need to play DVDs, save the drive on your console, and get a dedicated DVD player. Those are around $20, these days.
