Any force would work on each strand even though it is grouped in a cloud and seeded off the geometry. A few years ago I would have been amazed by the water but now with fluid engines like realflow I found it not as impressive. I was more impressed with how realisitic it was when he was knocked out and the filters/render effects they used when he blacked out and woke up. I also liked how they did the wood elements.

In my opinion neither is harder nore does either look better or worse. They are just different styles. They take about the same time to make too. drawing frame by frame traditional 2d animation takes ages and you see each bit get put together bit by bit as it gets layered on while 3d animation you create the character

I can actually answer this. Basically you have the geometry and the hair and fur engine is attached from the geometry. It creates a representation that shows you where it will be. You then shape the length and animate it as a cloud or shape like any other geometry or particle cloud.
