Membership in the Hitler Youth was mandatory for all German youth from 1936 on.

Pope Benedict did a lot of things he can be legitimately criticized for. Being born German in 1927 is not one of them.

I'm no fan of Pope Benedict but I will say that the Hitler Youth thing isn't fair to him. He had no choice in the matter, all children had to be in the Hitler Youth or there were repercussions. Membership was required by law. So I don't hold that against him.

Will he push to de-sanctify Mr. Wojtila for neglecting to follow up on reports of child rape in his church, and his extraordinary embrace of Marcial Maciel? Will he turn over Mr. Ratzinger to an international tribunal for failure to report child rape? Will he at least say those two are bad men who turned their eyes in…
