When asked what would have happened if they tried to do it once the books got popular they said something along the line of 'the fans would have eaten us alive.'

@mordicai: I concur on Robin. Yes, the Boy Wonder can ruin as story fast. But some of the VERY best Batman stories are about his relationship with the 'Bat Family' and the Robins in particular.
