Germany, France and the UK have populations well over 60 million. In any event, population size is irrelevant in implementing social programs. If anything, having a larger population base makes it easier.

Should ICE be abolished? From a PR perspective, probably. It’s now become inescapably tied to a modern iteration of internment camps.

Yeah, the whole “abolish ICE” thing is shortsighted and stupid.  Before ICE was ICE it was INS.  It’s not like this agency suddenly popped out of thin air.  We need an agency that operates more like a rescue service for people who are either walking across the desert or are being smuggled inside trucks like cattle.  

Get rid of ICE, and then what? Unless the plan is to do away with immigration laws altogether, someone has to enforce those laws. If not ICE, it will be someone else with the same objective. And as long as they’re taking orders from this executive branch, they’re going to behave the same way.

It’s the same reason why tilting against the windmill and screaming angrily doesn’t really mean much either.

When you’re a state government candidate you get to say things like abolish federal agencies to get elected. When you’re actually a federal Senator, and have been one for years, you realize things will happen if you do so, like ICE’s duties and likely personnel will just get handed off to other federal agencies.
