It definitely depends. I fly enough that I virtually always get automatic upgrades and am in group 1 on AA. On one flight a couple of months ago, I was group 3 and didn’t even think about it - I just went up when they called group 1. The gate agent chastised me for jumping the queue and kicked me out.
