I do a lot of my shopping second hand as well, especially from ebay. I buy one or two pieces new each season, usually work trousers or nice blouses.

The number of pieces cut at once is definitely a big part of the problem. The cheaper the clothing, the larger the number cut at once, which creates a bigger fluctuation in the actual dimensions in one size.
