Sam’s death absolutely served the plot. It triggered Jessie’s death, which led to Ron shooting Carl’s eye, which led to Rick starting the improbable but successful stand against the walkers, which led to Rick finally seeing that the Alexandrians are capable of stepping up and surviving.
The entire Anderson family is dead, and I will be shocked if Rick or anyone else WHO WATCHES The Walking Dead ever gives them a second thought.
Meh, I dunno. The Killtacular Killing Spree at the end really isn’t super outside of the way the Walking Dead works. Any time the group forms a stable perimeter they typically tend to hold up pretty well against a massive horde. These are slow, paper thin skin and bone zombies.
