i'm glad i'm not the only person fighting this war
me
way into this record. never quite got a hold on this band until i read darnielle's book; then i realized, okay, dude can fucking write. ashamed to say that it was mostly his voice that kept me away…which makes zero sense given my affinity for tom waits and screaming females.
the first scene is not "a bravura single take" that leads into a grisly aftermath. it's one take that cuts to another scene that is not a single take that then cuts to the aftermath. the circle-pan in the school only captures the creature once. there is really no deep focus used in the film. was that a halloween…
"Lewis’ opacity as a performer, his ability to appear at once duplicitous and utterly sincere, was used to great effect on Homeland, and it’s just as valuable here. His Henry is a king of seeming compassion and loyalty who is also more than willing to ostracize or doom anyone, man or woman, who displeases him…"

slide guitar on "small poppies" rips. record is super-slick, but the songs are SOLID
by the time i got to "a woman attempts suicide by eating Chinese takeout" it was all over
is this more or less incomprehensible than insurgent?
is the first paragraph ironic? sarcastic? confused? i don't know any more.
TRUE. i watched that set the other day, and holy shit that was great. just having everyone actually playing those parts gave the songs a jolt
i don't they need two drummers, for one thing; the swinging backbeats that drive their uptempo stuff got all rigid and constipated. and whoever was playing johnny marr's parts, well, dude is no johnny marr
i saw modest mouse last week in tampa: they were ABYSMAL. it was like every member of the band had a different notion of how to play the songs - a sort of live musical tug-of-war. only on "dramamine" and a couple of the pre-good news tracks did they cohere into anything solid.
zoe keating is a great choice for the music, but the rest…………..
i think the eyebrows just burned off my face from the sheer heat of that sculptor takedown. you could see the glow off that motherfucker from space.
