It was never feasible no matter who designed it. There’s some pretty hard mathematical limits on how small of sample size you can use for different blood tests. All of the tests that can use a blood drop and still yield reproducible results already existed.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a “middle-grade novel”?

the end result is basically a shittier version of something that’s existed for decades/centuries.

I recall that the pre-release marketing for Eyes Wide Shut seemed really off even before seeing the film. It was pitched on some magazine cover as ‘The Sexiest Movie of All Time?” Anyone familiar with Stanley Kubrick’s work could have predicted that this was not going to be a light-hearted romantic romp.

That’s funny, because almost the only time I ever drank Coke growing up was when we visited my grandmother, who kept it on hand for us a treat. She too lived in an old house, and although she had long since converted to more modern heating methods, the cellar still retained a decades-old pile of residual unused coal.

Ironically, Holmes’ firstidea” was not only a single machine that could detect and diagnose all disease, but one that could then dispense the correct medication. This falls along the same line of thought as my idea of inventing a light saber that could reflect all bullets, and cut through any material. I my defense,

I’ve been drinking afternoon tea for years... literally that, no party involved. I find it strikes the perfect balance between giving me a little pick-up to finish off the work-day, but not so much, like with coffee, that I still feel wired at bedtime.

Yeah, that “good idea” line tells me this reviewer still doesn’t understand that this was a scam almost from the beginning. There’s some very hard mathematical limits on obtaining reproducible blood samples. This “idea” didn’t work not because the wrong person pursued it, but because it simply isn’t possible.

Yes, it was good.  But had he not won the Oscar I would have probably all-but forgotten it by now.

Oddly enough, that’s the last year I really had any interest in the best supporting actor category, mainly because of Jackson and Gary Sinise in Forrest Gump. Both performances have only become more iconic with age.

Even in the 90s, I’m not sure anyone wanted to see that particular pairing.

There’s some movies you can tell are bad just from the theater poster or DVD cover.  Every thing about that picture screams “This movie is terrible”.

I’m hoping that several of the better writers here show up elsewhere... but with newspapers quickly dying, how much room is there these days for professional movie critics?

The pic caught my attention because with the small resolution on my laptop and viewed as a passing glimpse, the scarf looked like a snake coming out of her chest.

Hawkeye and Trapper John, heroes of the counter-culture for their rebellious, anti-establishment behavior (film versions), would quite rightly not fly at all today.

I have a vague memory of her in that film. I might be remembering this wrong, but wasn’t her role... um, a little humiliating in this Altman movie as well? Like, her character is rather pathetically throwing herself at some disinterested older man?

The version of Hawkeye from the movie, to put it mildly, would never fly today.

The Eurovision Song Contest?

The clips I’ve seen of the Oscar ceremonies in the 1940s look the same, although at least the guests presumably got a good meal out of it.

Maybe “empathetic” would be a better term.
