I had one for 10 years. It was fine. You could thrash it and have some fun and nobody else even noticed as you were just doing the speed limit. Ate mufflers but otherwise needed nothing beyond annual oil and tires. Under $20 to fill the tank.

My first poor-musician L.A. car. The little Mazda hand-me down went 190,000 mile with nothing but a new clutch beyond maintenance items. My first car was a 1990 Festiva L with the 5 speed manual. Had surprisingly good acceleration off the line and a 0-60 time of around 10 seconds.  It was very light and well geared. 

Wife had a 5 speed. Fun but still not fast. Awesome mileage. Actually built by KIA for Ford.
