I think you can steer in obvious directions and STILL deliver a satisfying show.  Winds of Winter delivered on 2 pretty obvious plot points (Sept Wildfire and R+L=J), but was executed really well, and made for great TV and great character/story development.

He was solid in Overlord, he seems to be a good actor. That said, he was still menacing, and turns into a literal monster, so it still seems in the same wheelhouse.

I mean, the writing by committee/studio notes/compressed timeline were all on display in S6 and S7, and they didn’t have GRRM source material either, but both managed to do great episodes (winds of winter being an amazing episode), even as the seasons as a whole were not great.
