As long as you have an actual credit card, try your local airport counter. Friday evening thru Sunday is your best chance due to corporate travel returns. The later in the evening/night the better, and less chance of a few planes worth of customers to compete with.

Understanding that your car is paid for out of two different budget items is a good way to put this. It eats all of your transport budget and is subsidized by your entertainment budget. And potentially future earnings if there are any issues that come up.

As someone who lost their earning ability halfway thru their prime years, let me tell you this is a moronic thought process.

Those cars drive so differently than anything else that renting for a few days makes way more sense than a 30 minute test drive.
