Zimmerman proved self-defense. Also, contrary to popular myth, he did not invoke Florida's "stand your ground" laws. He claimed he was attacked and defended himself, i.e., good old-fashioned self defense. You can disagree with the verdict or the Jury's interpretation of the facts, but that's how it went down, legally.

Not trying to rehash the Zimmerman case, but if you’re getting your head bashed in like he did, it’s not unreasonable to call that fearing for your life.

US law (which I’m using to refer to the laws of the respective states) requires REASONABLE fear for one’s safety. We can argue whether juries and public opinion apply that standard equitably and correctly, but I think it’s worth pointing out that at least in theory that’s what the law is.

As a rule of thumb in baseball that: you always overpay for a front line starter in free agency. If you want a guy in his prime you basically need to pay $1 million a start. It’s a significant investment/gamble that this guy will give the team 3 years as a top man, everything else is just gravy.
