To win, you only need 4 sets, and a pair. However any form of scoring will reward you getting similar types of sets. Almost all sets reward “purity” (getting only one suit, or only one suit and special tiles), and similarity (all runs or all 3/4-of-a-kind). That’s awesome. I love that even though Mahjong is a clearly Chinese game, it goes all over the world, and that _the_ place to play in the US is through the American Jewish organisations. I’ve had lots of western friends say they learned it/played it with their aunt/parents/grandparents too.
