This is why representation in genre matters. It inspires people. Clearly for Cristoforetti, seeing a female commander of a star ship was a big fucking deal.
Indeed. What he did with Star Wars is a pretty astonishing act of creativity. Even when you consider that every element can be traced to something else... It's all in the synthesis, the ability to take those disparate components and make something genuinely compelling. Star Wars did that in a crazy way than so many…
John Williams’ Star Wars score closely resembles the work of several classical artists. Here’s a neat video comparison (there are more out there):
I was watching ‘Tomorrowland’ with my wife last night, and there was something really sad and ironic about trying to listen to the quiet, thoughtful parts of that film while having to hear the incessant banging and booming of ‘San Andreas’ coming from the theater next door.
“All around you the coal mine canaries are dropping dead and you won’t take the hint! In every moment there’s a possibility of a better future, but you people won’t believe it. And because you won’t believe it you won’t do what is necessary to make it a reality.”
“Told you so.”
Well, speaking as someone who actually liked Tomorrowland enough to make it a guilty pleasure, I guess this is disappointing.
That’s too bad. I rather enjoyed Tomorrowland.
At least while Star Trek V fails, it fails as identifiably a Star Trek movie. Star Trek the Remix of Khan doesn’t even have that going for it. .. .
“Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in…
I doubt anyone will read this, but this journal is REALLY important. The percentage of performing musicians who suffer injuries borders on 100%. The percentage of performing musicians with chronic injuries is around 80%. The most common injury is repetitive strain, which can effect wrists, fingers, elbows, shoulders,…
Christianity is adapting and changing. As a young Christian, I see the massive cultural shifts that are happening in the community. There’s a growing number of Christians who are just fine with the Church not being this all-reaching, pervasive institution that it has been. There’s a growing number of Christians who…
He saved the girl. That’s the story.
Another good tactic is to sit down and watch something she really wants you to watch, as a trade. This is how my boyfriend got me to watch Daredevil. In exchange he had to watch period pieces with me :)
I know it’s not 100% on-topic, but it seems close, because they didn’t realize Galaxy Quest worked better as a PG film until after filming it. The final cut works so well, I can’t imagine the R-rated version of it would have been any more fun (and probably would have been less.)
Really looks like a Mandelbrot set!
Reminds me of an interview with Nicholas Meyer where he mentioned that resurrecting Spock kind of diminished his death in Star Trek II. In both cases I think they are partially correct. It does kind of alter things on second viewings. But I also think in both cases, the writers came up with some pretty good ideas…
