Girl, it’s gonna be ALL Astrid ALL the time. It’s gonna be Astrid and Charlie Wu. No way they brought in Harry Shum Jr. looking soooo freaking hotcute for just a teeny cameo.

Yeah, the movie did seem quite different from the book. Same characters (sort of) but a different story. Still loved it, but Jon M. Chu said the sequel would definitely focus on Astrid and Charlie (Harry Shum from Glee!?!?) and Kitty Pong and Bernard (ADORE Jimmy O. Yang). I’m excited! But we probably won’t get it for…
I loved it!!! The wedding scene gave me chills! But PLEASE more of Astrid!!
Okay, then. I, an anonymous internet commenter, have demands for this 2nd film. I’m gonna need more Astrid (Gemma Chan) in this one. And I will be sorely disappointed if there isn’t loads of Kitty (Fiona Xie) being ridiculous and OTT.
I’m delighted to see that this pulled in nearly double what Wahlburg’s Mile 22 made over the same period.
I saw this last night, it was so much fun and Constance Wu NEEDS to be crowned a rom com goddess because she has the all the spunk, charisma, beauty and more of all the great female rom com actors that came before. And if anything I hope the success of the movie makes the studio drop even more money on the sequels…
While it’s good that people are pointing out that that Singapore is more than just rich ethnic Chinese people (given many Americans, in particular, wouldn’t have a clue), is it really a valid criticism of a film based on a book that specifically tells the story of...Crazy Rich Asians?
“There’s been some criticism—people have pointed out, for instance, that the film erases Singapore’s ethnic minorities in favor of focusing on the country’s wealthy Chinese population.”
I saw it! It was awesome!
OT, but who else saw Crazy Rich Asians this weekend? It surpassed expectations at the box office, and I was thrilled to contribute! Such a delightful movie!
My only gripe with the movie was that it needed 25x more Kitty Pong. But I am thankful that Constance Wu actually made me give a crap about Rachel, which Kwan didn’t succeed as well with in the book.
I would read and/or watch an entire spin-off series just of Kitty Pong.
One of the interesting commentaries on Awkwafina’s role in Ocean’s Eight (written, IIRC, by Elaine Liu), was that it was an opportunity to showcase Asian-Americans as something other than their stereotypical role of the ‘model minority’ variety of smart, over-achievers. I hadn’t thought about whether or not it would…
She OK in this first movie, they don’t show enough of her for my taste though. CANNOT WAIT for her in the 2nd. There better be a 2nd.
I’m only in it for Kitty Pong. She was, by far, the most fascinating character.
The food is often the most interesting character in the book, so I’m really looking forward to just drooling while watching the food scenes in the movie. [I say this with much affection, I thought the books were the perfect beach-weekend read!]
No, Amber has moved on with her life and (like a typical abuser) Johnny can’t let it go and keeps trying to pick fights so she’ll never be free of him.
This wasn’t “stealing from royalty.” This is stealing publicly owned national treasures. Decidedly not funny, though it would make for a fun heist movie
This is a really incredible article - very well researched, clearly written, accessible for lay audiences and film buffs alike. Congratulations! I was fascinated and now I’m planning on watching it!
Andrew, clearly you’re still rather young (I say that principally because while you’re a fan of classic Hollywood film, you just came to Stage Door last month, and Stage Door is definitely chapter 1 in the syllabus of Classic Film Fandom). As someone who’s been a fan of this film for 40 years, I think I’m well…
