Here's why they call it a P-trap. The P fell down. It's more of a question-mark trap, really, but calling it a ?-trap would probably just invite more confusion.

After seeing what can stick to a pipe, I can't blame you. But in a pinch, or for someone who doesn't want to go that far, you could always run a pipe brush through or even just a bunched up work rag just to clear out the scum.

If you're lucky, the built-in stopper lever can be removed independently of the sink drain pipe (the pivot ball is usually held in place by a threaded collar like the top of a mason jar) and you can get the gunk off of the stopper and lever tip without having to remove anything else but the trap.
It's an S-trap if the drain piping after the trap goes vertical (down). It's a P-trap if that piping instead goes horizontal (into the wall). It's the same concept as far as the trap itself is concerned.
