There are no "endings" in real life, sure. But as they make a point of mentioning a number of times in this and earlier episodes, Serial isn't journalism. They're crafting a true crime story, and in that capacity they absolutely can build an "ending".

After reading the blog posts over at "The View from LL2" (the site with the very detailed call log dissection), I'm now pretty convinced that it's going to come out that Jay was responsible and chose to frame Adnan when the police investigation got close enough to him that he couldn't remain out of it entirely.
