she should feel ashamed of how badly she ruined Naomi Osaka’s moment
Her opponent being a woman is irrelevant to whether umpires treat women differently, which they do. This is well documented.
A coaching violation in a Slam finals is a ticket for going 3 over the speed limit. It is clearly illegal by the letter of the law, and if it’s being enforced then the person doing it is an asshole.
That sort of frustration isn’t unusual for top-level athletes, and yeah...there’s something of a pattern there. When she was penalized for threatening a line official, she was a couple points away from being upset by Kim Clijsters. Her 2011 blow-up came while she was losing to Sam Stosur. She’s a fantastic player, but…
No one besides Naomi Osaka should feel good right now.
What the umpire did was basically arrest Serena for jaywalking. Illegal sure, but it also comes across as picking on her. And Serena isn’t exactly new to unfair treatment
She’s one of the most unfairly criticized, and mistreated athletes in her profession. What you call “worship” others call balancing the scale to the poor treatment she often receives
The first penalty was legit, but the ref failing to make clear he assessed a penalty is the ref’s error. The 2nd penalty (equipment violation) was problematic, because it compounded on the 1st problem (failure to make clear that a penalty had, in fact, been assessed).
I’m glad Serena tried to get the crowd to stop booing and ruining Naomis moment. She was all class trying to cheer Naomi up after the match. The officials have been poor throughout the tournament.
The ref seemed out of line (based on my admittedly limited tennis knowledge) but Serena handled it poorly as well. I’d hope that Serena would make a statement supporting Osaka and saying that no matter what happened between her and the ref that Osaka deserves praise for her win.
I hope to God Naomi wins another major, because having a literal childhood dream come true —vs. Her childhood idol Serena, Center Court, US open finals, first Grand slam finals not only for yourself but for any woman for your country, and have it turn nightmare in this way is just horrid.
The ref has to swallow the whistle. He could have said “I am close to giving you a game misconduct, is that what you want”? He was as out of control as she was. McEnroe, Nastase and Conners all did much worse. It was sexist to the core.
It really felt like Osaka threw the game to Serena right after she was awarded one on penalty. She couldn’t be too blatant because Tennis Rules but it sure seemed that she was trying to even it out after the BS ruling.
Naomi Osaka - never meet your heroes.
God, that was some bullshit. Everybody lost: Serena, the public, and especially Naomi, who turned in a world-class performance but now will always have an asterisk accompany any mention of this victory. It was an all-around bummer. What a weird moment to enforce the coaching restriction, topped by that overkill game…
“Hey, what should we call our artisanal marshmallows that have been crafted with cane sugar and cage-free egg whites? How about FLOATERS? Nothing says Christmas like a big, hot, chocolatey floater! Does that work for everyone? Why is Ned laughing?”
I mean I think he sounded pretty fucking pissed. But I didn’t interpret it as him being mad Moonlight won or bitter or jealous AT Moonlight or anything. I kind of just interpreted his aggressive affect as being pretty pissed overall at the situation. I can imagine how disappointing, shocking, and frustrating it can be…
The way he grabbed the envelope from Beatty was kind of a dickish move.
Also, it wasn’t Horowitz’s job to straighten that shit out! But the producers and Kimmel and the accountants and the announcers all seemed to get a collective fit of the vapors and time was ticking so Horowitz stepped up and got shit done. This is a good character trait. We want these sorts of people around when…
