I'm a business app programmer...so my actual experience in game programming is pretty limited. I've played around with Unity but never got back to it by the time the 2D toolset was released. It seems like it has nice support and would work well...but maybe there's something else that would be better suited?

Unity was originally designed with 3D in mind...but has had an official library for 2D graphics since 4.3.

Ahh..it just sounded like you were hating on unity. Its very easy to use and there are a lot of cookie cutter templates out there that are abused to create very uninspired games. As a result I've seen a lot of misguided hate for it despite the number of counter examples.
