apparently you missed how people were very upset for not taking the literal meaning of hitting as any un-consented to touching. Maybe you should bring up the silliness with them? Or read the thread before commenting?

No, that isn’t what it is. You don’t have to act, but by not acting a different harm results. It is a way of viewing what is ethical. If spanking (an act to discipline) is considered bad but other actions like time-outs lead to indirect harms, is there an ethical difference? Many variants should be treated equally

I don’t think it is foolish at all unless you are such a literalist that assumes everyone else is a literalist as well. Must be a bit fan of the late Justice Scalia. I think it was pretty clear the distinction that was being made to all be pedants.

Actually, as pack animals dogs instinctively respond to dominance to establish the pack leader, so maybe not a good example of a contrast to “lording physical power”?

A) the post I was responding to said “would never hit” and if you were reading along pendants were very upset for people not using the literal definition of hit. Maybe read the threads before becoming invested enough to comment?
B) You don’t seem to understand the trolley problem, so maybe that would be a first stop

well now you are out, so they must have done something right :)

Never? So you wouldn’t slap a had away that you suddenly saw reaching for the stove? Or one that was about to be shoved in a dog’s mouth? Or one of the many other cases where you would have to act fast and possibly “hit” them to protect them?

What if you instead of spanking put them in time out and they smack their

That’s how kids end up dead? Seriously? That is like saying sending your kid to bed without dinner is how they end up dead of starvation in the basement. In other words: massive leap.

I agree as to the pejorative.

I don’t think they were trying to argue the literal meaning. The issue is that the words you choose can have an different connotations associated with it and you sometimes want to distinguish between them. Sure an open handed spank and a punch to the face are “hitting” but it would be foolish to consider them

way to read much more into a comment then you can possibly know and tell people how to parent. Congrats.

If your kid was grabbed by CPS you better the hell look up acceptable parameters before you say a word.

but what if it is GMO corn? /sarcasm

but that is made from oil! [type of person using Honest products screaming incoherently]

“ I’ll probably stick with cream and letting the kid walk around without a diaper as much as possible with this next kid.”

The idea of my toddler spending any amount of time one the loose without a diaper is terrifying.

In her case it probably is. Rehabilitation is about recidivism and unless you think she is likely to rob a bank, it is probably of a narrow focus. The third prong of prison is deterrent. So a longer sentence may be justified on the basis of deterring other people from doing a similar un-vetted document dump. Under the

as opposed to what? In this case it is punishment. It isn’t like you need to rehabilitate her from leaking classified documents again.

you are assuming on average that all violations are the same

yes, but the Golden Globes are picked by the foreign press...

And schools are?
