I don’t understand this....you don’t think charitable donations should be tax deductible? Also, Amber clearly isn’t “donating to charity for the tax break” since she has very little income relative to the size of the donation

Yeah, but I think they were discussing a plea deal where the charges are dropped in exchange for a charitable donation (read bribe). If that were not the case, I’d advice Lochte not to go to Brasil. I doubt the US would extradite.

Thanks, this is a good explanation of the possible tax implications which depend a lot on how the settlement agreement was structured.

Short form for people who don’t like links:
If he gave the money to her directly:
......and it is considered a divorce settlement, it is not income. She can give the whole amount to

People familiar with human interaction will readily understand “everyone” as encompassing a little bit of hyperbole. People looking for something to be upset about will always find it.

I’ll sign on to anything said by the creator of Babylon 5

Corollary: And some people will decide to just be assholes.

The problem, as noted in the post, is that these definitions have been expanded to varying degrees to encompass much more than you say.
As for controversial speakers, while I don’t want to listen to a racist, what is controversial to us may be different than what is controversial to others, which quickly descends into

I don’t know about Chicago specifically, but there have been cases of protesters blocking access and assaulting student reporters for “invading their safe protest space”

There are valid points, but everyone will instead gravitate to the extreme version of each side.

I agree with you and too often the argument for changing behavior falls solely on the woman in the situation. However, while the excerpt may walk the line, it does seem at least to be attempting even-handedness in its suggestions.

I get that. I guess the main issue is how that information is used. However, I think that understanding people’s motivations doesn’t necessarily excuse their responsibility.

agree completely. I guess I’m of the camp that there is no thing as bad information if the information is accurate even if it is unsettling. How it is used (e.g., how does it go into educating) seems to be key.

I don’t know if I find the removed portion “offensive”. If it is research based (and accurate), it tells us about how people respond to alcohol, which is important to know in order to better address it.

on the other hand, male nurses make up 9% of the total and 10% of chief nurses. Yet, interestingly the men make slightly more on average.

Orangey the cat had an illustrious movie career including the role of Cat in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

it is taken nearly verbatim (though without quotes) from the AP source which states: “The 10-month-old Persian cat owned by Arthur Newman of Jersey City, N.J., demonstrates her hypnotic powers, discovered by chance when a young lady fell into a trance after looking into the cat’s eyes while petting the animal. Puffy

Nice collection of strawmen there. I guess this is the point where any further conversation is useless.

That isn’t relevant. And if he had just walked away? Did he feel like he could walk away without risk of bodily harm or death? That makes it robbery. You can’t hold someone at gunpoint to get paid. Moreover, I don’t know about Brazil, but in the US you can’t shoot someone for walking away from a misdemeanor at best.

You don’t pull a gun unless you are willing to shoot someone. It isn’t a toy. This has nothing to do with the death penalty...I know you are not from the US, but that is a pretty common way to refer to extrajudicial killing of someone for non-life threatening circumstances or crimes.
