Sometimes networks will do that to try to get people hooked on the pilot. AMC did it with Low Winter Sun (and promised us Breaking Bad previews at the commercial break). The annoyance in the room was palpable.

Yeah, there was practically no mystery in True Detective, despite the title. It was more of a character study with a little police work thrown in for kicks.

That's when True Detective hit its sweet spot, if we're keeping up the comparisons.
