I think what he nailed is that Spock isn’t emotionless; he’s just extremely well-trained at concealing them and presenting a neutral, calm facade. He says arrogant and mean things to McCoy all the time. Being able to play someone who is calm on the surface but is being kind of a dick is what he pulled off.
