Hollywood has forgotten (if it ever really knew) that "stakes" are in the eye of the beholder, and usually that eye should be your protagonist's. If you write a strong character the audience can relate to, the stakes can be personal. Look at Taken. A simple premise: guy rescues daughter. Personal. The outer world

Look at that cover. Good lord is that beautiful. Love the description too, so I started reading it. So far its as gorgeous as that cover. Really like Sedia's voice. I've never even heard of her until this article. Thanks for sharing!

Hmm... the guy's had one screenplay produced. David S. makes a lot of shite, but at least he's been around for the other DC movies. And The Dark Knight Rises still had the Nolan Bros writing on it and it still managed to be pretty lackluster (though I still will go to bat for it if the right fanboy pushes my buttons.)

That is damn good news about Snowpiercer. Here's keeping my fingers crossed...

I gotta go with this guy:

LOVE this article. Good to see the shout out to Mieville, the New Weird, and Perdido Street Station (one of my favorite books). Have never heard of "grimdark" before, but it sounds a lot to me like the Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch (who is sometimes compared to Abercrombie, but I have only read a tiny bit

Actually, in today's world you're not allowed to LIKE anything. Its not cool to like things. Practice these lines in front of the mirror: "I mean, its decent and all, but..." or "yea, when I first got into it, it was great, but..." so as to stamp down any evidence you may actually, unapologetically like something.

Love the drive-in! Saw Elysium and The Conjuring at one this summer. Weird combo, but nothing beats seeing an old-school scary movie at a drive-in! Good times had by all.

Was going to post a whole lot of something... but didn't read the whole title of this post... I need sleep.

I love io9, but is this like a "do an Upworthy post" exercise or something? The most anti-science ad ever? Really? Leave the hyperbole to those other guys and keep doing what you do - which is be awesome, intelligent and informative, not petty.

This flick was bonkers and funnier than ever would have imagined. All my friends I went and saw it in left having had an excellent time and one consensus was clear: if (or more likely, when) Hollywood goes to make a MotU update, they better be sure to call up Alan Taylor.

I agree. When I opened an EW that had a bunch of the Covergirl ads in it, I was blown away. Talk about completely missing the point. And its not like a huge franchise like the Hunger Games NEEDS this type of tie-in or advertising. Its just a sickening money grab, given the themes in the novels. And the sandwich was

Yea, there's seriously 100 things wrong with this scene. Can't believe it even got filmed in the first place. A waterfall against Jedi? This isn't the Goofy Movie. There's literally no threat to Jedi from a waterfall.

Took a bite; it bit back.

This is awesome.

Hmm. There's this really bland, flat aesthetic popular in some of these new supernatural shows (Ravenswood, Dracula) that is just beyond boring to me. Even if the shows looked engaging from a narrative standpoint (which they don't, to me) I would still be put off by their look. Anyone on here watch these shows? Do

LOL I love Doctor Who but I gotta recommend for the "I'll see myself out..." line. Perfect.

Now playing

The X-Files has been mentioned some. I agree. "Home" was terrifying, and "All Souls" really stuck with me, too, as well as "The Host". But honestly, the thing that creeped me out more than anything about that show was the freaking opening credits/theme song. I could barely watch them. It was just so eerie.

Oh man that is trippy...

"Cumberbatch's Dragon Voice" just sounds so so dirty.
