The secondhand concept goosed by goodly grossness aside, the real issue here I think is just a crappy script. Scully's sorrowful speechifying here was as excruciating a tactic as it was during the latter seasons in an attempt to goose the angst level. The self-pity act is still tiresome 14 years later.
