Ok, here is the thing. Those insults and accusations? They did not exist in a vacuum.

The movie did fine. Not a massive megahit, but hardly a flop. It performed above Sony’s expectations and has made more than its budget, not to mention that the toy sales have been phenomenal.

To be fair, the original had some weird alchemy of having Dan Ackroyd’s bizzare D&D campaign of a lore background as told by a bunch of guys who had some fun with it.
