Keep calm and smoke another joint mr 420

And yet car culture, and this website in particular, celebrates people like Alex Roy and Ed Bolian who literally sped across the entire country.

Look obviously you can’t take into account every possible variable. But there are unrestricted portions of the autobahn, and Nobody bats an eye at those. Why? Because the unrestricted portions are few and far between and circumstances have to be ideal, but they exist.

It was Texas, things are different out there. Especially when you are from a small town and stopped for gas in another small town.

I 10 from Mobile to Texas mostly sucks. A lot of it is poorly maintained and south Louisiana drivers are awful. It’s an 85mph road tops.

So have I, but it’s much more rare. Again you have to pick your oproads and opportunities

Yes, I thought about mentioning that, but I figured not enough people would know what I was talking about, or ever drive that road.

I’m well aware of the math. That’s why ~95% of the 15-20,000 Highway miles I log every year are spent below 90mph.

Which is why I don’t drive like that on anything but limited access highways, and I’m always covering the brake. Hell I cover the brake when I’m cruising at normal speeds, because I’ve seen enough people misjudge things at the speed limit.

As I said, to do sustained driving at those speeds you have to have the right car (with great brakes) pick and choose your opportunities with ideal traffic conditions. and most importantly you have to be hyper vigilant, ready to jump on the brakes. I like to set the cruise control specifically so I can cover the brake

Yes mileage can suffer, it’s a trade off you have to decide on. My best road trip car was an Audi B5 S4 Avant with a custom built TDI trans. 5th was the original 6th and 6th was a crazy OD, I wanna say it was .56 or .58? (Some audizine-r will probably correct me with the maximum OD you can fit in an 01E trans) I

Yeah, I hit a couple deer back when I was in high school. I learned my lesson from those experiences. Both of your videos are 2 lane roads, and I will say I’m a lot more cautious when I get on roads like that, or ones with lots of trees and or curves.

You know it’s funny, I actually had a couple run-ins with cops on that trip, I had one flash his lights at me while I was doing about 120, then I got to the next town about 15 miles later and stopped for gas, a cop was at the station and walked over to me when I pulled in, he obviously hadn’t seen me driving, but he

Yeah I’m not saying everyone should drive that speed, but if you know what your doing and how to judge conditions and distances it’s safe enough. Obviously you should have performance oriented tires in good condition. On my run I had Michelin PSS with less than 2k on them and I knew my pressures were perfect before I

It’s funny the obsession with high speeds people some people still have, 140 mph is a completely safe speed to travel at in a modern car. Obviously you have to take into account your vehicle and road/traffic conditions. But if you’ve got space there is nothing wrong with opening it up. I remember making a road trip

that really boosts the pleasure I take in recounting it

Obviously. You can get a Miata, Fox body, BRZ, boxter or any number of other performance cars for that mark. But I wasn’t talking about buying the all out best performance car you can afford. As a 2nd car my ideal is to get something that performs well, and is an appreciating classic. Why buy something they made

My goal is to finish my 190E cosworth by the end of January and my 911 targa project by the end of April. Then be able to actually enjoy my 30th trip around the sun.

2 is perfect: a good daily and a vintage, I would usually recommend an outlaw 911 or hopped up e30, but my current recommendation is 190E 2.3-16v. They are easy to modify and nearly as good as an e30. Plus you can still find a good one for 10k.

Amen. I’ve had 3 cars for years now and it’s exhausting. One is usually in the shop and on the rare occasion all 3 are home it feels like I have to play 3 card Monty every time that I choose to not drive my daily.
