I think a lot of it has to do with the game's plot, a lot of which is told through discovery. The first game left a lot for you to figure out on your own through various secrets and hidden things in the background, the second had these creepy, cryptic Atari-like cutscenes.

When this thing's in motion, it kinda looks like it's made up a few different characters.
