What gets me about that writer is that it characterization she creates is such a small population of people like herself. It’s a useless criticism and it’s tiresome to see it repeated.

This whole conversation seems to address imaginary problems of imaginary white liberals. It’s not very productive and to follow it doesn’t really lead to any new avenues of discussion. It really says more about how people perceive white liberals and their relationship to Macklemore than what white liberals are…

The people talking about hipster are the same people the supposed hipsters are calling hipsters. It’s this terrible circle of very boring middle american fear and identity struggle. It’s projection.

“Hipsters” don’t exist. It’s a term used by boring people to denigrate the mythical other to feel okay about being boring.

How is being interested in a mainstream pop act performing on national television “hipster” or “cutting edge”?

That’s the problem with comedy— it’s all pretty common observations that aren’t very interesting. Everyone has made all these jokes before. Comedians just believe they have more right to this garbage.

The problem with comedians and stealing jokes: their inflated sense of self, creativity, and wit help them ignore that their jokes are common.
