Somebody picked Cannibal Holocaust for a cult movie night back in college. One of the few movies I’ve ever walked out of, largely because the characters are insufferable assholes. It does have an inexplicably beautiful theme tune, though.

The Du Maurier story is fantastic. It has a cutting wit and growing dread all of its own.
So sad. Apart from everything else, his writing was so good. He would have made a magnificent full time music critic and writer.
I suspect he’s one of those cast members who I won’t fully appreciate until he leaves and I realize what he brought to the show, like a Tim Meadows.
Well, I don’t approve of the family murdering part but the excuse me showed good manners so I’ll let it pass.
I was trying to come up with who would be the contemporary Gene Wilder and I drew a blank. He was a genuine one of a kind presence - manic but controlled, frazzled but ultimately kind. There’s some terrific suggestions here but there’s only one Wilder.
That car destroying scene wrecks me. Ralph has finally found a friend but is willing to have her hate him if it means saving her. It’s such a weird mix of noble and brutal.
Yeah, I hated the trailers for Frozen and Zootopia and I love those movies. Makes me wonder why their trailers are so off.
All in favor of this. The first movie is genuinely delightful. Witherspoon is a terrific dramatic actress, too, but I like her best when she’s funny.
I enjoyed Solo just fine but it does feel like a movie that could have a dynamite sequel once they had the characters in place and a clear tone. That first half hour feels like a different movie and it takes a little too long to get to Lando and the woke droid.
You could probably make a decent Black Mirror episode based on this.
Hair seems like a strange choice - some great tunes but a shaggy, misshapen plot. But who knows? I wouldn’t have expected the Jesus Christ Superstar production to turn out so well, either.
That Batuman piece was great. A mix of lonely people, people obsessed with social roles, and people who seem to have major control issues. I was thinking of something closer to Werner Herzog territory than a sitcom but who knows.
I often lost patience with some of his particular obsessions but when he was good he was one of the greats. Still remember reading The Ghost Writer for the first time and just being floored by how good Roth could be.
Yeah, I didn’t realize I needed an Ashley cameo until she popped up. The only cameo that felt a little forced was Brad’s, where they actually pointed out how odd it was for him to show up at Axl’s goodbye. But, hey, I like Brad, so I’m not complaining.
I started watching this show several years ago because of the AV Club reviews and I’m so glad I did. Glad the death napkin got a final nod and that scene with the three kids in the backseat at night was perfect.
At least this one is recognizably human. Still not sure what that one Kylie Minogue statue was aiming for. Space vampire maybe?
I don’t think I have ever seen a good show so completely collapse. This would be a mercy killing.
It was the AV Club reviews that first got me to watch The Middle. Really strong family sitcom. Will be missed.
Milhouse’s suicidal therapist made me laugh, mostly because I was expecting a Sixth Sense reference and they went in a different direction with that than I expected. The rest of this was pretty dull, really.
