I think it's a mix of things. It's an orderly and traditional way to move through categories, it ensures you learn any writerly cleverness early, and you can build up your score before finding a DD.

I watched a couple of episodes of Las Vegas, when it was in syndication, and came on after Supernatural on TNT. All garbage, except him. He can anchor anything and make it better.
