Only tangentially related, but does anyone else loathe the phrase “do better”? Even if I agree with the person, it’s an instant turn-off for me. It comes across as super smug and condescending to me. Might just be personal hang-up though.

Generations was such an unforced error. The core story was okay, maybe on-par with Insurrection, which was fine but basically a TV episode that they decided to make into a movie instead. The Nexus stuff was neat but it would’ve been neat to explore further and have Picard have to find his way out rather than going “I

Co-sign that. I’m happy for people that love it, but it crossed over into camp for us. The shouting!, the big speeches!, the self-face-slapping! (even the small moments felt BIG and telegraphic). Everyone turned up to 12 for an hour doesn’t give you anywhere to go. That said, I had problems with the whole season.

Unpopular opinion: They never got around to eating in that episode, but holy shit did the scenery get devoured. It’s like the director said, “OK, let’s do it like Scarface, but less subtle.”

Fuck Chinese imperialism (and imperialism in all forms) - but bans like this just make these countries look insecure and neurotic. If a movie about barbie dolls “denigrates your sovereignty” than I’m not sure how much self-respect you have!

Disney hasn’t had a bonafide hit that didn’t require an asterisk this year.

Every. Fucking. Picture.  I would convict his ass just based upon that.

He’s constantly sporting the “Shaq eating wings” face.

The trailer did a fantastic job of making me completely uninterested in the movie. It pretty much just summarizes the entire plot, while also making said plot seems amazingly generic.

That face, always that face in his photos. What the hell look is that supposed to be??

I watched the trailer for this along with several other before seeing Across the Spider-verse and as transporting and spell-binding as that movie was I kept thinking ‘man, every frame of this film makes those awful noisy trailers look like tired, generic crap.’

I expect nothing from Trolls 3 and will get it, but this

Yeah I didn’t even realize any of the meat of the movie was in Arkansas.  The point was that Chaney booked it out of the state for the frontier after killing Maddie’s dad, and she needed someone to go after him.

Another runner-up for Arkansas:  Mud.  Honestly, I would have chosen it over True Grit.  Much of True Grit takes place in Indian Territory, which is modern day Oklahoma.  Plus, as an Arkansan, I felt like it the most Arkansan movie I’ve seen.

I agree with you overall on having more variety, but as someone who thinks Turning Red was underrated, I feel the need to point out that it did have a slightly different animation style that I enjoyed. It was more in the movements and editing though than the actual look.

I’m trying to think of the last time Pixar character design blew me away (WALL-e?). Even their most recent classic in my eyes, Inside Out, the character designs of the emotion is probably the least inspired thing about it.

again, you’re getting in the weeds with plot beats. i’m not talking about the plot i’m talking about the concept. simple as.

And it’s not like those early greats didn’t have real-life themes:

Marketing for Elemental focused on the fantastical setting and simplistic Romeo and Juliet love story, without ever letting on that it’s also an allegory for the immigrant experience and the ways in which outlier communities can be systemically excluded from urban planning and development.

I think the problem is character design. The earlier Pixar films, while having less technology at their disposal in terms of lighting and shading effects, had simple but effective characters. Monsters Inc is a fine example of strong design. Then every other animation studio caught up and everyone is using the same

i know a lot of people think the main reason is ‘everyone was trained to watch pixar movies on disney+’ but i don’t think it’s that.
