the backlash is because Velma represents the worst sort of (uninteresting) “provocation” in which beloved characters are made to do and say extremely uncharacteristic things.

I think Mystery Incorporated and A Pup Named Scooby Doo were good cartoons.
I haven’t seen Yellowjacks, and I wonder if Yellowjackets fans are projecting something onto this character, because what they are saying of her vs. what I saw of her, are two different things.
Counterpoint: nothing really in this episode showed her to be the badass you’re making her out to be. She seems to be hired for her amazing performance in Yellowjackets, but in this episode, we only got to see her whack the doc who was already tied up (maybe don’t kill one of the only doctors in your community during…
To me, Lynskey’s role is the first poorly done tell rather than show that we’ve had for the series.
Same. This KC militia is basically being run by a Karen, and I’m not sure I buy in.
Yeah I had a problem with Melanie Lynskey as well. In fact I could not figure out Jeffrey Pierce looking all mercenary-badass would be following her—or for that matter everyone else. In the discussion after the episode one of the producers describes Lynskey as a “ruthless leader” and something to do with Pierce being…
I know people really like the Mario sketch but the reason you can “imagine [it] going into development” is because it went into development. There was a weird, dystopian Mario movie and it was much stranger than anything in the sketch, so that made the sketch kind of a miss for me.
“I’ll never forget the first time I stepped up to that podium and announced the first pick in the NBA Draft. I only wish my first love, Winnie Cooper, could have been there to see it.”
Can’t believe he had time to run the NBA and narrate a television series. What a guy!
Get a job!?!? Were they serious? I didn’t realize it at the time... “To everything, turn, turn, turn...” And so on.
Yeah, this site used to be the best for in-depth, thoughtful reviews... Now all we get is this recap garbage. Back when Allison Shoemaker and Alasdair Wilkins were writing for the site, I’d come here just to read their reviews. Now I just visit out of habit.
This review reminded me of the text-box you see on a lot of Wikipedia articles: “This section may be overly detailed.” Listing every beat of the episode’s plot one after the other gets tiring to read, and aside from saying that Bella Ramsey is “credibly American” I have almost no sense of whether the acting is good…
Counterpoint: The Last of Us was already basically an interactive film, versus being a video game first and foremost (Sony seems to focus on those with their first party games, from Naughty Dog’s recent output to the God of War reboot). If you just cut the gameplay segments and create one of those “video game movies”…
It even hits Okona levels of outrageous.
And yet people accept Avatar’s premise without complaint? This is outrageous. Like “Jem and the Holograms” outrageous. It even hits Okona levels of outrageous.
Yeah arguing that it’s not a white savior movie because it’s not based on a 30 year old white savior movie but even older white savior material is not the winning argument that Luke seems to think it is.
Short-term thinking also explains the most tedious criticism of the first film: that it’s just Dances With Wolves in space, complete with all the problematic “going native” and “white savior” aspects of the narrative. Put aside for a moment the fact that Cameron’s actual credited inspiration is Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Jo…
WW84 was average as fuck and such a disappointment.
Not especially. It was about as good as a mid tier Marvel movie, the third act was pretty trash.
