I visited Halifax in September. There’s still reminders of the blast; buildings gouged by debris, parts of the ships thrown over three miles, mounted where they fell. The city’s maritime museum is one of the best I’ve ever seen; excellent recounting of the explosion.

The comparison with Halifax is interesting. The cause there was far different — bad seamanship and shipboard ordnance storage. But, of course, there was a racial/ethnic dimension, as in all disasters.

Yeah, before I got to the ‘WWII’ part of the headline I thought this was about the Halifax explosion.

Came here to say exactly this :) Looks like Halifax had a lower tonnage of explosives involved, but the total magnitude of the blast was higher.

Wikipedia has a helpful stack-rank for this. And this was a cool story I hadn’t heard, nonetheless.

Yeah, I thought the Halifax Explosion was the largest manmade explosion prior to the nuclear bomb, and it predates the Port Chicago one by 25 years.
