Remember when Cersei was a character you could care about?

Genesis Countdown, or Stealing the Enterprise from the Search for Spock soundtrack were definitely used in the temp track.
As well as a bit of Alien, when they walked through the abandoned Orville corridors, but the real surprise was hearing the theme from John Williams’ Seven Years in Tibet score when they approached

Maybe they should just give her a new role, it’s not like anyone would recognise her outside of the L’Rell make up.

The problem with the Discovery Klingons is that they’re completely overdesigned. There’s so much room for creativity in redesigning them, their look has changed so much through every iteration of Star Trek, that as long as you put some ridges on a guy’s head you’re fine. But between Neville Page and Bryan Fuller we

If it didn’t have Star Trek in the title it would be enjoyed for what it is: a fairly thrilling science fiction show with some plot holes.

But guess what? Star Trek has never been perfect tv. Enterprise had maybe two thirds of one decent season in its entire run.
Does anyone actually still watch Voyager?
Nothing

Yep, the tone often reminds me of the kind of melodrama you find on a Joss Whedon show. For better or worse this is Star Trek for the Marvel-era.
The writing leaves things to be desired (for example, why exactly is Control such a threat to life?), but there is much to enjoy about Discovery if you stop comparing it to

Because our standards for what’s considered good tv are much higher these days.

People are hard on Discovery, because it doesn’t just have to compete with other genre shows, it also has to be better than the imagined Star Trek series in every fan’s head. BSG had been mostly forgotten by the time the new show came out, Star Trek is still fresh in people’s memories and fiercely loved. It’s hard to

Daedalus was the inventor, Icarus was his son. He built two pairs of wings for them to escape the island of Crete. But Icarus was a dumb-dumb and didn’t listen to his dad when he told them that the feathers on the wings were attached with beeswax, so they shouldn’t fly too close to the sun.

No, this is a reference to the guy who built himself a pair of wings.

Not to mention the ‘cannabis edible’ Kelly ordered from the food replicator while on duty in the 1st season.

On the one hand it’s silly, because rum, whiskey, etc, are all products made in very specific ways, with particular ingredients. So no alien world would be able to produce actual whiskey or ale.
But on the other hand a word like blood wine is much more evocative than some made up Klingon word.

The problem is that The Orville looks like a (cheap) parody of Star Trek, has juvenile satire of Trek, and then attempts to earnestly tell stories like Star Trek. It wants to do too many things at the same time, and only rarely succeeds at it.

The dialogue on this show can be so over the top, it’s more Babylon 5 than Star Trek.

It’s because none of the people involved with the show have a real visual imagination or sense of style. Fuller has a distinct imagination, and the Klingons in season 1 definitely had his baroque finger prints all over them. But for the most part this show is made by people who are just copying stuff they’ve seen, or

Because Amazon is fundamentally misunderstanding the appeal of both Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones. They want this to be their big show, but without taking some massive creative licenses there’s nothing in the Tolkien’s unfinished scribbles that would translate into anything more than diehard Tolkien fans

Haha, this is all such a bad idea.

Yeah, if he can show up on Kimmy Schmidt for a glorified cameo, I doubt he’s too big of a deal to do Star Trek again.

The problem with Discovery’s writing is a problem of abundance. On TNG or any other previous Trek show, the writers were forced to do more with concepts, because they didn’t have a cgi monster that could be cheaply plugged into the episode. So instead of actually giving the Ba’ul a voice and a viewpoint, they’re just

Yeah whoever does the temp-tracks is really at the top of their game.
