The music, where it exists, is perfectly fine. It’s just used much too sparingly, same with sound effects in general. That’s why I call it a sound design problem rather than a music problem.

This felt like a pilot season. Like, the whole season was the pilot. It is unpolished, incomplete and sparse, especially compared to Simpsons and Futurama, which it must be compared to. That’s a shame since they had the Netflix order, I feel like they should have put more effort into birthing it into the world

Sure. But there is SO MUCH good tv out there and some folks have limited free time. :/

I like the style and the music in the title sequence, but you do make a good point. Problem is, I don’t think this world is fully baked yet. There is potential, but so much feels flat and unfinished, and the fact that we have seen so little of the world, as if this was a tv show that had to build sets and they didn’t

I’m up to episode 5 now, and it definitely gets better after the first one. I’ve been watching Futurama lately too, and one difference I noticed that felt off when I started Disenchanted, was less background sound effects. Understandable given the setting, but still.

You the entire thread in multiple posts“I skipped around and barely watched it”.

Finally get called out “No wait wait wait, I watched almost all of it”.

Busted, chump.

Famously, the best way to determine whether a show is good is to skip around and see where it goes. Jokes don’t rely on context or pacing so you definitely gave it a fair shake.

I’m about 5 eps in and I’m enjoying it well enough. I definitely think it’s still finding its feet and I agree with all the other comments about how it took time for Futurama and even The Simpsons to really get going.

The sound design is remarkably awful. There are large segments that are completely silent: no dialogue, no music, no background sounds. Just nothing. It makes the world feel dead. There is almost no music in it at all, and even scenes taking place during fights or in places like crowded taverns are just strangely

It’s not terrible - I like Andre’s laidback evil delivery a lot - but the pacing in the pilot is so weird. It seems to speed up, slow down, backtrack, and repeat. Granted, as other people have noted, comedy pilots in particular tend to be rough.

My favourite joke is that the elves are named after their one trait, with an “O” and the end.

So far I’m finding Disenchantment to be more character driven than Futurama or The Simpsons were from their outset. While it is a bit slow in the start it might be because with Netflix Groening may have found a better opportunity and a place to grow his characters as opposed to having them shoved in a time slot during

I'm looking forward to the point where every review doesn’t have to mention “Futurama is set in the future, the Simpsons are set in the present, and this is set in.. get this.. the past!”

Two belly laughs come at the end of the episode. And the “racist antelope” sign and callback was pretty good.

Not the greatest pilot ever, but definitely good enough to make me want to see what happens next.

Matt Berry’s character is basically medieval Zapp Brannigan and I am completely fine with that.

Fry’s hairdo is seen on one of the wig stands in the episode, for the curious.

Eric Andre’s the strongest of the leads, but Nat Faxon’s fun. Jacobson probably needs a few episodes to find it. But that’s the show as a whole. I figure this show will take a few to find its rhythm. It’s not like, new territory in any way, because, hell, even Futurama played with these tropes, but I’m interested to

I really struggled with this, from the moment Bean let out a Homer-esque burp I started to cringe, and whilst there are definitely some funny moments a lot of the humour reminds me of The Simpsons, but post season 12 Simpsons which of course is all rather bleak. I hope it improves as I’m fond of many of the voice cast

Matt Berry continues to be the Best at all things.

The supporting voice cast is dynamite, but of the three leads, Eric Andre is the only one that works right now.
