I’m from small town Midwest & farm/hunting culture. (FWIW: hunting is a conservation issue, unless you want to re-introduce wolves and cougars to the countryside. Yearly limits are based on maintaining healthy populations.) Anyway, the more vocal mindset of the NRA is not representative of most gun owners I’ve ever kno

Yeah. Same with my son. He’s very good at math and would be on track to take calc as a senior. I’d let him if he wanted to, but I steered him toward stats. Same with my daughter.

This is the same thing I say about reading. Kids are curious, and there is no substitute for wanting to know something. Make it a game. Work it into common activities. Find something that grabs their attention and ride it, no matter if it’s “serious” or “rigorous” or whatever. The suggestions above are all good.

It’s one thing to be vulnerable and empathetic and let them know smart people struggle with things. Super important.  I think the comment was more about passing on a mindset that math is dumb and they don’t have to try.

Part of the problem with the mindset people have is what “failure” means. I always refer to it as “technical failure,” which means you can’t complete the rep with good form. With a little experience, you can tell when you won’t be able to complete the next rep.

Good advice, with all the caveats people have said about gym etiquette.

Important difference: Having an old isn’t assault. Your example only holds if I park the car on your lawn.

Keep it in the garage, or keep it in a storage lot. Being a decent human requires a greater attitude than “I do what I want, fuck you.”

Boring cars are the problem. Interesting cars are the answer. Don’t let your HOA tell you otherwise.

In this way Trump is much, much smarter than many give him credit for.

When a worldview routinely equates being poor with moral failing, it’s easy to justify denying assistance to their lazy/druggie/irresponsible asses.

Well, they should have thought about that before they decided to be not rich and then get sick. You shouldn’t get sick or be born with a hereditary condition until you can afford it. Plan ahead. It’s called personal responsibility, people.

Ah yes, the age old enemy of freedom: someone protesting fascism.

It’s actually very consistent logic. Trump believes he is a priori the smartest person in the room. Which means if you disagree with him you are (again, a priori) dumb. It’s a 1st grader’s worldview and built on a logical fallacy, but it’s otherwise sound from there.

Yeah, yeah: but is a Jeep a sandwich?

Yes! Replay done correctly (if at all) isn’t about getting it absolutely right, but about not getting it obviously wrong.

Means he’s smart. I’m a lifelong Knicks fan, but I’m glad he escaped this dumpster fire of an organization. Even a Unicorn can’t overcome bad management.

Tarantino has his problematic bits, but he has a history of writing strong female characters. Doesn’t put him or this movie above reproach, but this feels like begging the question.

Strategies I use

Good article. Points I really like and would echo:
