I've got nothing against it. But like its successors The Broadway Melody, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Cimarron, it has a very strong tragic element to it. Wholly optimistic films don't tend to win Best Picture.
I'm not sure if this is strictly an LGBT issue. The Oscars have, in general, favored tragedies over other genres, going all the way back to Wings (1927). Sure, occasionally an optimistic film manages to slip through the cracks, but Best Picture is generally pretty bleak.
