They did offer the auto tragic transmission. It supposedly didn’t play nice with the turbo lag. Wikipedia lists it as 30hp less than the manual option.

My guess is the pilot was flying VFR (visual flight) and was trying to stay below the clouds. He’s extremely lucky to be alive. He must have been going slow when he got snagged.
