That was a big reason for me as well, home protection and future road trips. Haven't used mine for anything but target practice too. I took my conceal carry class a while back, best thing ever. I don't really plan on carrying anything regularly, if at all, but at least that way i'm not sweating it if i have it…

Bought my Glock 17 when I was 21 and haven't regretted it since. Just fit my needs best.

Yeah, the Glock is an awesome weapon (own a 17), but the 1911 is definitely the quint-essential american handgun.
